Who are we?
St. Matia Mulumba Home of Hope is a Ugandan-Austrian project that aims to foster children from extremely needy families. By providing education in a protected environment those children get a good start towards a self-determined future.
We care for orphans, children of single mothers who have no income and children from vulnerable families
The project area is situated in Kyengera, Kampala.
The project is financed by private donations, sponsorships and charity events. Primarily those donations come from Austria, through the club Hope4Uganda. But also local charity groups support us by giving donations in kind.
Who are the children in the project?
The girls and boys are between 5 and 19 years old. Most of them attend the primary school on site. Some already pursue their education further at a Secondary School or at a Vocational Institute.
Who chooses the kids?
Sr. Rose and her work is well known in different surrounding parishes. Therefore other Sisters, neighbours or village people who know of difficult family situations often ask for admittance of a child to St. Matia Mulumba Home of Hope.
With our support, those children will have a chance to get education and as a result will have a good start into a brighter future.
The three pillars of our project
EDUCATION
We help needy children to discover, develop and explore their potentials.
We promote proper hygiene, physical and mental health and encourage good morals amongst the members of the community. Children can grow up in a protected environment.
Furthermore we finance qualified trainings for our teachers.
SELF-SUFFICIENCY
Our agricultural programme as well as a piggery and poultry project helps us to reduce the running costs.
The tailoring business on the site is another contribution to generate income.
- Purchase a pig for 20€ or support our tailoring studio with fabrics and materials.
MICROCREDITS
We give small loans to single mothers in order to enbale them to build up a simple business. This should help them to give a financial support to their children's education.
- With 60€ you can support a mother on her way into independence!
SPONSORSHIPS
A sponsorship ensures that the child can stay in the project until it has completed its education. Furthermore the child is offered a suitable accommodation and can grow up in protected surroundings.
With 1€ a day you can take over the full costs of education for a child at primary level. With 300€ a year (around 330 USD) nearly all the costs for one child are covered.
In general, parents that are able to are urged to contribute themselves financially to their children's education.
The children are pleasantly surprised to receive their sponsors' letters, usually handed over once a year. At Christmas the children write back to their sponsors.

How it all began
After the death of my brother Katongole Matia, I, Sr. Rose Nakate, was appointed to take care of his children and the land he owned.
In 2014 I used the rental rooms on that place and a loan to start a school with 35 pupils and 3 teachers. At that time pupils were still sleeping on the floor. Those pupils came from really poor families so the fee each child was bringing wasn’t enough to run the school.
But this didn’t make me lose hope. It was then when I got the idea of transforming that place into an orphanage.
In 2015 I met Maama Eva from Austria who helped me to look for sponsors in Europe. From that time on any development that took place at St.MMHH we owe to a great part to Eva Aufreiter and Gerlinde Barth. More classes were furnished, beds were bought and more and more children could stay on the project area.
In 2016 a new, big building was constructed to serve as a dormitory and to house more classes.
In 2017 and 2018 we could increase the staff and arrange for more basic equipments like connection to the water supply for example.
