Secondary and Tertiary Students 2025
We are committed to provide a qualified education to our students. At the moment we are supporting 26 students in their further studies. The relatively high costs are covered through sponsorships.
All those Secondary and Tertiary students in the picture have grown up at St. Matia Mulumba Home of Hope. After completion of their studies some of the students even contribute to the project or get fully employed at the site, like for example Denis Kalyango (right).
We are proud of those who recently completed their education: hairdresser, construction worker, 3 farmers, journalist, teacher, tailor
For our P7-leavers we offer support up to S4, Secondary School or for a 2-years' vocational training.
Maria Namuzibwa has made it!
She has started her small hairdressing business in January.
Bukuya - agricultural department
Lukyamuzi Matia practices organic farming to produce good food for our children at school in Kyengera. The harvest this year seems to be very promising: cassava, maize, beans, matoke, coffee, sukuma wiki, mangos, jackfruit, avocados,... Matia has developed that agricultural sector together with three permanent farmers and four students.
Thanks to Matia's efforts, our piggery is also thriving!
The elder pupils spend their holidays there working in order to gain experience in farming.
Our tailoring department
Our tailor Titibiya Geoffrey is not only sewing our school uniforms and casuals. He is also providing washable sanitary pads for the girls. And he has been very creative this year .......

June 2024: Family visits
MAAMA ANGELIS: like so many young Ugandan women she left for Saudi Arabia to work there as a housemaid, leaving her little daughter behind with her husband. The idea was, to send home money to save up for the child's education. Unfortunately her husband spent all the money she sent, so that when she returned she had nowhere to start from.
Daughter Angelis became part of our project. Her mother will be supported with a small loan.
FAMILY SHAFIK: After the death of four daughters and their husbands due to Aids, the family has lost everything. Grandmother and another daughter are now left to take care of 13 children. Without the income of the other daughters who contributed a lot to the daily needs and to education, that family doesn't even have enough food now and the living conditions are extremely poor.
We helped to start a small ice-cream business and found sponsors for nearly all the children to get educated at St. Matia Mulumba Primary School.
FATHER NANTONGO is a brickmaker and very creative and hard working. He has built his own house, consisting of two buildings. Nevertheless, he finds it too hard to cater for his 5 children. His wife has no income and his 17-year old son no job. The little money he earns as a bricklayer can be used to feed the family but it is not enough to pay for school fees.
Daughter Maria was included in our project.
MAAMA FAITH has five children. She is a single mother, her husband doesn't care. Grandmother takes care of her children when she looks for jobs. Her 5-year old daughter suffers from sickle cell anemia and needs regular treatment which is expensive. The girl is weak and small for her age.
We could take two children of that family to St. Matia Mulumba Home of Hope.
School year 2024: The number of our pupils has doubled!
Thanks to the great results of our school, there is now a big run on St. Matia Mulumba Primary School. We are currently hosting 80 pupils in boarding and provide education to another 45 day-scholars.
May 2024: A big bag full of SPORTS WEAR
The sports club ASKÖ URFAHR with trainer Lisa Simader donated numerous T-shirts and shorts for our pupils. They were handed over at the national championship of handball in Linz.

August 2023 - Planning to construct a new school
MEETING WITH THE ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER: Currently teaching is carried out in provisional rooms which are too small and dark. The present compound is tiny and unfortunately there is no chance to enlargen it. So our big plan is to construct a new school building with a spacy compound in the countryside. We are going to shift to Mitiyana as soon as we have the financial means.
July 2023 - Project visit
So happy about the visitors form abroad!
First initiative: planting vegetables at the compound
The children are eagerly sewing and planting
They tomatoes are thriving soon!
Lots of different repair works, like loose sockets,...
setting up new laundry poles,..
repainting the entrance area
make the site look much more attractive!
Necessary items, like matresses, blankets and bedsheets for the children are purchased
Games brought along inspire the youngest
Mathematical educational games are a challenge for the older ones
The children pick up rules quickly
Every day fun!
There is still enough time for lessons
sports
and music and dance
Four volunteers from Austria were supporting ST. Matiya Mulumba during their three weeks' stay. Their main concern was to organise free time activities with the children and to carry out small works at the site.
The project is situated in one of the bustling suburbs of Kampala, called Kyengera

Those youths will also get some knowledge and experience in farming.
Sister Rose is watching over all the progress.
October 2021: Pig raising project
The pig sty is a part of our agricultural project in Bukuya. The sale of pigs and piglets will generate income and meat will improve the menu at special occasions.
September 2021: Agricultural project in Bukuya
An important step towards independence: The plants grown here shall secure the food supply for the children in the project and at the same time contribute to lower the running costs.
Organising the work - Daniel Ssenyondo, former pupil of our project and now graduated in agriculture is giving instructions
January 2021: The new pig sty is finished
Activities during Covid-19 pandemic
Renovation of the drainage - the old one was leaky and so water entered the buidlings, especially during rainy season.
Start of a small chicken project - it shall contribute to a good supply of food and provide a varied diet in future.
Start of a piggery project - it will also be the base for a better food supply but also bring some profit.
Income projects moving on well
The grandmother and the aunt of Florence and Geoffrey have started piggery. The grandmother has 28 grandchildren to care for.
With the help of small loans, parents have started their businesses like food kiosks, piggery and poultry rearing, vegetable growing and beauty saloons.
In spite of the 3 months of Corona lockdown they managed very well to continue their projects.
Headteacher Juliet with her two sons - the youngest is physically handicapped - has stayed on the premises. She is running a small piggery project in the neighbourhood.
Very proud of the small food stall along the road
The mother of Angella and Princess sells tomatoes, onions and snacks. She has fought to keep her business alive during the lockdown.
Matron Catherine and her four children are staying at St. Matiya Mulumba Home of Hope. Stella opened a beauty saloon but had to close it during the lockdown. Nevertheless she managed to pay back a big part of the loan before.
Ugandan Good Samaritans donating mattresses and food
Supply during Corona lockdown
23 persons, among them children, secondary students and staff, remained at the premises of St. Matiya Mulumba Home of Hope and they are safe there.
After three months of lockdown Ugandan families suffer from insufficient food supply. All prices for food have massively increased.
At our small project site we have started to cultivate vegetables in bags. This guarantees a continuous supply for the remaining persons during the lockdown period.
Matia is praticing roof top gardening. In fact, his dream is to get a job in the field of agriculture one day.
February - March 2020
SES-Expert Hannelore List trains the community
HER TASKS:
- Sensitising the staff, especially the teachers, for their work with vulnerable children by focusing on their problems and their conditions.
- Offering them possibilities of empowerment and skills to improve their work with the children in the project.
- Bringing up social and everyday-life challenges for discussion, changes and proposing recommendations.
- Increasing social interaction by reinforcing team work and by suggesting improvements.
Thank you for the great collaboration!
Parents empowerment - Income projects for mothers
After a long time of preperation and instruction of the parents in different workshops that project has been started in October 2019.
The objective is to foster the parents or guardians of the children at St. Matia Mulumba Home of Hope, so that they can build up a small, stable income. With that regular income they should be able to cover their basic needs and to contribute to their children's education.
For a start we are focussing on parents who own a plot of land where they can grow food. A microcredit enables them to purchase seeds and to cultivate vegetables, corn and fruit.
After a year, the credit has to be paid back. That money can then be offered to other parents and their business ideas.
THE NEW MAIN BUILDING
We are very proud of the enlarged building that has been completed in 2019 with the help of private donors from Austria and a support of the Upper Austrian Government.
The new building houses a girls' and a boys' dormitory and one big classroom that can also be used as an assembly room. Solar panels on the roof provide electric light in the evening hours.
Visit of the Austrian partners
Summer 2019
with a ceremonial opening of the new main building, including Mass and wonderful musical, theatre and dancing performances which were composed and rehearsed by two very gifted secondary students, Denis and Simon.
New stove
Until now cooking has been done on open fire on the ground. The construction of this efficient stove makes it possible to cook using less firewood.
